Assign a YouTube Video to Annotate using Hypothesis
Create a new Canvas assignment
Create a new assignment in Canvas. From the course navigation menu, select Assignments > +Assignment.
Open the Submission Type dropdown list.
Select External Tools.
Select Find while leaving the URL search bar empty.
In the pop-up window, scroll down and click on Hypothesis, which will take you to a new pop-up window for configuration. Do not click Select for now because you must configure the options first.
Assign a YouTube Video
In the new pop-up window, select YouTube.
In the new pop-up window titled “Select YouTube video,” paste or type in the URL for your target video, then select the → button.
The name of the video should appear in a field titled ASSIGNMENT CONTENT. Select Continue.
You will be rerouted to the Configure External Tool window. Select Select.
Now the assignment is created. Select Save and Publish at the bottom of the page so students can access this assignment. Navigate to the assignment to begin annotating.
Hypothesis automatically extracts the captions generated by YouTube. Select a section of the transcript to see the Annotate and Highlight options.
Select Annotate. Enter your annotation in the Annotations panel. When finished, select Post to [course name].
To see the annotations you have added, click on the profile logo and select Open notebook.
Grading in SpeedGrader
Find your Hypothesis assignment in Assignments, then select SpeedGrader.
SpeedGrader automatically filters comments for the student you are grading. Assign grades and/or provide comments for selected students. You can view each student’s comments by selecting the student’s name in the Student List dropdown in the top right corner or page through their submissions using the arrow buttons.
