Install and Use the Respondus LockDown Browser (Students)

Respondus LockDown Browser, which will be enabled for all users on January 20, 2026, is a software tool designed to heighten the security of online exams. When you take a Canvas Quiz for which your instructor has enabled LockDown Browser, you will be unable to navigate to other websites, print, use instant messaging, and other functionality that may be conducive to academic misconduct.

The University will provide you with a link you can use to install LockDown Browser on your device. System requirements are Windows 11 or 10 for a PC and macOS 11 to 26+ for a Mac. Your instructor may also provide you with an ungraded practice quiz you can use to familiarize yourself with LockDown Browser.

To use LockDown Browser when completing an exam in Canvas, follow these steps:

  1. Open Canvas and click on the name of the assignment you will complete. If you have not yet installed LockDown Browser, you will be prompted to do so at this time.
  2. Click Take the Quiz when you are ready to begin. Remember that you will not be able to navigate away from Canvas while taking the exam.
  3. If prompted, close other programs that are not permitted to run while LockDown Browser is active.
  4. Complete the exam as normal.
  5. Click Submit Quiz to finish. You will then automatically exit LockDown Browser and be able to use your device as normal.

If you run into technical issues while completing the exam, contact your instructor. You can also review Respondus student documentation.
